A Letter to the Girl I Was in High School

high school

Dear High School Me,

Everything will work out for the better. I know you’re probably hurting right now and extremely stressed, but it’s going to be okay!

The girl you become in 4 years is one you’d be proud of. She really seems to have a handle on this little thing called life. Sure, she still has her moments, but she’s turned into a great young woman.

She’s jumped over all of the fires that have been set in your path… hell sometimes she had to walk right through one. But, she survived.

She wakes up every day just like you do. She goes through the motions just like you do, but there’s something different… more put-together about her.

You’ll get there. It may take 4 years, but you’ll get there. Your struggles aren’t over, but they won’t break you. Stay strong, push through, and make these next few years count.

Being in college will be one of the best experiences of your life. You’ll make some amazing friends, you’ll meet some amazing advisors and professors. You’ll make the most of your time, and you’ll even run for a few positions in different clubs and organizations (I know, that’s crazy to think about, right?).

It will also be harder than anything you’ve gone through this far. You won’t be getting all A’s anymore, but you’ll learn more than you ever have before.

You’re going to really enjoy all that college has to offer, but I won’t give away where you decide to go just yet ;).

Stay Golden,

Your Future Self at 21.

10 of My Absolute Favorite College Blogs

The Young Hopeful.

The Young Hopeful is one of my favorite blogs because it gives a lot of FREE resources to help you get your college life in order. It also gives a lot… and I mean A LOT of advice on college and your life after.

Samanthability.

Samanthability is one of my favorite blogs because it gives some insight into the best study strategies and also what to do when you’re in a rut.

A Wanderer’s Adventures.

A Wanderer’s Adventures is the perfect guide for anyone thinking about studying abroad, but it also has a lot of good information on college.

The Confused Millennial.

The Confused Millennial is an AMAZING blog for anyone who wants to know the truth. This blog has loads of content that is helpful for the millennial girl. It also has a lot of inspirational messages.

College Girl’s Ramblings.

This blog is good for the girl that just wants to hear about someone else’s life. It really is just about the author and her life. She doesn’t have many posts, though.

Here is to the Twenties.

My favorite thing about Here Is To The Twenties is that this girl is not afraid to show her faith. She also tells readers about her life.

Let’s Talk About College.

I love this blog because while it is helpful, it tends to be funny as well.

Stephanie May Wilson

Again, this girl is another one of the girls that isn’t going to ignore her faith for her blog. A lot of the helpful articles that I’ve gotten from this blog have been faith-based… and I love that.

Aspyn Ovard

I actually first heard of this girl on YouTube, and her blog tends to be similar to what you would see on YouTube with someone’s Vlog Channel or if they are a Makeup “guru”.

The Soul Scripts

This one is another faith-based blog that is perfect for the college girl in need of finding her faith again.

Is it Really Better to Give?

The answer to that question is simple. Absolutely. You see, when you’re a child, all you can think about is the gifts that you are going to receive. But when you get older, you realize that one of the most important things about the holidays is what you give to others in your community… not what you receive.

Thinking back on the last few years, I realized that my favorite memories of the holidays were helping out with Christmas Cheer.

Christmas Cheer is an organization that has the primary goal of providing toys for children and food for their families for the Christmas holiday. Also, the money goes toward warm clothes and food for the families. Basically, in order to help out, you can either ‘adopt’ a family to raise money for, or just donate to the charity. If you ‘adopt’ a family, you are responsible for coming up with the money to help out that family. Over the years, my family and I have helped out with a few different families through this organization. We have raised a lot of money for the organization, and I am very proud of this.

Also, we hosted an underwear drive for some homeless shelters this past year. (the cover picture is of the underwear that we were able to buy).

For us, the holiday season is about giving. During the years that we helped out with these two projects, we did not get presents for each other, and we did not ask for presents from other people. If they were insistent on buying us gifts, we asked them to donate money to the cause instead.

The point of this blog post is not to show you what we have done, it’s to show you that it is simple to help out during the holidays.

Volunteer for an organization, create your own drive for something, or even just donate money. Whatever time, energy, and money that you can give is greatly appreciated.

Giving means more than receiving, and it feels a hell of a lot better to give back to the community.

This year, I’m hoping to do some volunteering at a local soup kitchen or something. I can’t wait to see what this year brings.

All in all, remember what you were put on this Earth to do.

As a Christian, I know how important it is to give back, as that is what God has sent us to do.

Enjoy your holidays, and as always…

Emily

What Am I Thankful For?

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!

I just thought that I would make a list of the most important things that I am thankful for in my life right now. There is obviously a lot more, but here are the most important things in my life. Enjoy!

God. Obviously, God is at the top of my list. I am so thankful for all that God has brought to my life and the fact that He is always there when I need some guidance.

Parents. You guys have shaped my life in so many ways, and I love you. I’m so glad that you are my parents. I would have picked you even if I was able to pick my parents.

Brother. Thank you for always being there for me. I’m so glad that you are in my life. I miss you, Justin!

Grandparents (and Great-Grandparents). Those who are still alive, and those who are not… that have still impacted my life in ways I would never know.

Aunts, Uncles, Cousins. I’m so thankful to have y’all in my life. You make the holidays a little more bright.

Cats. Nemo, Midnight, Missy, and Yo-Yo.

Sisterhoods. I am so thankful for Phi Mu and Alpha Delta Theta for bringing me close to girls that I could not see me living my life without. You all mean the world to me.

Friends. Y’all rock! Thank you for being here when I need a break from studying or just a distraction from all that is my stressful life.

Professors, Mentors. Thank you for showing me that I have the ability to accomplish all that I have set as a goal for myself.

Pharmacy School. The fact that I am able to be in pharmacy school right now is a gift in and of itself. It may be hard, but it’s been my dream for forever, and I can’t believe I am accomplishing it.

Food, Drink, Clothes, Housing. These are obvious, but I still felt like I should include it.

21 Years of Life. Every day, every hour, every minute of life is a blessing, and I’m so glad to have lived so many of them.

Happiness. Last but not least, I am happy. I’m so glad that I am able to have a little happiness in the chaos that is my life in college.

There are many more things to be thankful for, but I just thought that I would list a few.

Happy Thanksgiving and as always,

Stay Golden,

Emily

Why I’m Celebrating My Parents On My Birthday

Today, I may be celebrating myself, but more importantly, I’m celebrating my parents.

Without them deciding that they wanted the blessing of another child, I wouldn’t exist. They could have very well just had one child and decided that was enough.

But they didn’t do that. So, they had a beautiful baby girl on November 14th, 1996.

Not only am I celebrating my parents for having given me life, I’m celebrating them for shaping that life into what it is today.

I’m celebrating them for twenty-one years of dealing with me, of parenting me. I’m celebrating them for teaching me the difference between right and wrong and that everything has consequences (good or bad). I’m celebrating them for their ability to always cheer me up after a bad day, or just make me feel better when I’m sick. I’m celebrating them for making a house a home and a family more than just the people you live with.

They didn’t get to choose the child that they created, but they got to choose what type of person I grew up to be. Parenting is a big part of what makes us who we are. And they did an amazing job.

So thank you, Mama and Daddy, for giving me life, and the ability to live it how I should to be the person I want to be.

I love you both so much.

Happy twenty-one years of shaping me into the woman I am today.

Stay golden,

Emily

Why It’s Totally Acceptable to Plan Your Life on Pinterest

People always criticize me for having my whole life planned out on Pinterest, but what they don’t realize is how much easier it makes things. Here are several benefits to planning your life out on Pinterest.

It saves time wedding planning. I mean come on, who really has the time to take a whole year out of their lives to plan their wedding? That’s why you plan ahead of time and leave the rest up to your mother or Maid of Honor.

It’s fun. Idk about you, but to me, there’s something fun about browsing through Pinterest and finding ideas for different meals or outfits or whatever your little heart desires.

It gives you something to connect with when your friends talk about plans for the future. There have been countless conversations with my friends about what our futures are going to look like, and we all have some sort of Pinterest planning going on.

It’s free party planning. Have a birthday coming up? A wedding? A reunion? A costume party? If you need help planning it, go on Pinterest and find lots of fun and creative DIYs for you to do to make it a success!

Keep Pinterest-ing and…

Stay Golden,

Emily

Repost: “15 Reasons Why You Should Date a Southern Girl”

My beautiful roommate, Raegan, posted this earlier in the year, and I really wanted to post it here so that y’all could see how wonderful she is (and how accurate this is) Love ya Rae! Check her out on The Odyssey Online and Her Own Personal Blog.
Southern girls will rock your world and impress your Mama.
The south has a lot to offer, and if you find the right girl, you might just end up staying! My county has a saying: a place to visit, a place to love, a place to live. So if you are still looking for the right place to live, and the right girl for you, here are 15 reasons you should date a southern girl, especially if she is from North Carolina.

1. Southern Accents

N.C. accents are actually quite cute. Southern belles with a drawl will keep a smile on your face!

2. The Sayings

The endless country sayings will have you laughing on the floor, and you will probably end up using a few yourself.

3. Family Recipes

Date a girl who has the secret pie recipe from her grandmother. At a young age, girls are taught that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

4. Beach or Mountains, Take Your Pick

One of the great things about North Carolina is that you can turn a weekend into a quick vacation to either the mountains or the beach! Both are just a few hours away, and are perfect day trip dates.

5. Sporting Events

Here in the south, we go crazy over our football, baseball, and basketball games. We go all out! It isn’t an unusual sight to see someone decked out in camo. Also, during football season, Friday night dates are nonexistent. Unless you count watching the game as a date.

6. The Scenery

You don’t have to go down the road far until you run into a picturesque sight. Taking the scenic route on a date is a popular and romantic option.

7. Country Music

We sing it and dance to it. Country girls know how to shake it!

8. Charming Manners

Yes mam, no sir, please, and thank you. We know them all and know how to show respect when you bring us home to meet the parents.

9. Family Loyalty

Family ties run deep and when you get involved with a southern girl, just know that you quickly become a part of the family as well.

10. Sugar, Spice, But Not Always Nice

We’re cute. We’re sweet, but if you push us too far, we take a baseball bat to your truck….Just kidding! But, we aren’t scared to let our tempers fly when things are taken too far. Mama didn’t raise a pushover.

11. Sweet Tea

Ah, come to the south where the tea is sweet, but the girls are sweeter!

12. Cowgirl Attire Is Cute

Because who doesn’t love a girl in boots and a hat?

13. Can Handle The Heat

It gets super hot during the summer, but we know how to handle it and stay cool when you are sweating like a pig.

14. Just Enough Sass

We come with just enough sass to keep you on your toes. Besides, it would be boring if we weren’t sassy!

15. She’ll Go To Church With You

My favorite thing for a guy to say to me. One of the most important things you can do together as a couple and the hardest part is trying to decide whether you attend yours or her church each Sunday!”

Repost: “14 Reasons Staying in Friday Night is Always the Answer”

Sometimes you just need a night to kick back and relax.

1. No one is judging you for wearing your PJs at 8pm.

2. There is also no shame in falling asleep at 10pm and wake up well-rested.

3. The only drama you will witness is via Netflix.

4. As you binge watch the latest original series

5. Pets are so much better at cuddling than boys anyway.

6. You can stuff your face with ice cream or pizza, (OR BOTH) and suffer no judgement.

7. You can rock the messy bun all night.

8. There’s no struggle with makeup for an hour before heading out (AKA no redoing your “classic wing” three times before it’s just right)

9. Staying in means staying in bed, our real one true love.

10. No fighting off unwanted attention at the bar.

11. You won’t get a headache from standing next to the DJ.

12. There’s zero chance of a drunken one night stand that you’ll regret in the morning.

13. You get to spend one whole night treating yourself.

14. And you will remember every moment of it.

10 of My Favorite TV Show Quotes for When You Can’t Go On

“If you aren’t willing to keep looking for light in the darkest of places without stopping, even when it seems impossible, you will never succeed.”-Amelia Shepherd; Grey’s Anatomy

-Amelia Shepherd; Grey’s Anatomy

“Sometimes pain becomes such a huge part of your life that you expect it to always be there. Because you can’t remember a time in your life when it wasn’t, but then one day you feel something else. Something that feels wrong, only because it’s so unfamiliar. then in that moment, you realize you’re happy.”
– Lucas Scott; One Tree Hill

“If you want crappy things to stop happening to you, then stop accepting crap and start demanding more.”

Christina Yang; Grey’s Anatomy

“Tragedies happen. What are you gonna do, give up? Quit? No. I realize now that when your heart breaks, you got to fight like hell to make sure you’re still alive. Because you are. And that pain you feel? That’s life. The confusion and fear? That’s there to remind you, that somewhere out there is something better, and that something is worth it.”
-Nathan Scott; One Tree Hill

“Destiny is for losers. It’s just a stupid excuse to wait for things to happen instead of making them happen.”

-Blair Waldorf; Gossip Girl

“Breathe, eat, sleep, wake up, and do it all over again until one day, it’s just not that hard anymore.”

–Elena Gilbert; The Vampire Diaries

“Change, we don’t like it, we fear it, but we can’t stop it from coming. We either adapt to change or we get left behind. And it hurts to grow, anybody who tells you it doesn’t is lying. But here’s the truth: the more things change, the more they stay the same. And sometimes change is good. Oh, sometimes change is . . . everything.”

-Meridith Grey; Grey’s Anatomy

“Life is full of color. And we each get to come along and we add our own color to the painting, you know? And even though it’s not very big, the painting, you sort of have to figure that it goes on forever, you know, in each direction.”

-Kevin Pearson; This Is Us

“It turns out sometimes you have to do the wrong thing. Sometimes you have to make a big mistake to figure out how to make things right. Mistakes are painful, but they’re the only way to find out who we really are.”

– Denny Duquette; Grey’s Anatomy

“Smiling doesn’t always mean you’re happy. Sometimes it simple means that you are a strong person.”
